Save the Date!
Just a reminder that our Open House is on Thursday, August 28th from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 for 4th and 5th grade. I look forward to speaking with all you parents about the great year ahead of us! I hope you are all staying dry, and hopefully snuggling up with a good book!

What is a Tropical Storm?

Well I suppose Fay is on her way, and cutting our first week short. I can't lie...there were tons of cheers today for a long weekend. We've had a great start, and now deserve a little rest. This week we did learn the difference between a hurricane and a tropical storm. Make sure to ask your child to see if they remember. We will start fresh on Monday and hopefully dry! Here is our first list of spelling words: cancel, travel, castle, salad, catalog, cabinet, blanket, tractor, magnet, cabin, palace, glance, paddle, sang, shampoo, accident, activity, classroom, absent, and ballot.

We've Made it Over the Hump!
With three days of fifth grade, we've survived. We are having fun getting to know one another. As you can see some of our boys are pretty comfortable already! Leave to the boys. We started science today and math. Tomorrow we will add in some writing, as we draft a classic mystery story.

Off to a Great Start!
Well we've only been to back in school two days, but it seems that we are off to a great start! Our class has 22 unique and talented students. I am eager to get to know them all, and talk with parents at Open House on Thursday, August 28th at 7 p.m. Keep checking our blog for updates on all the fun things that we do throughout the year!

Bowling Into the Year!
The Gilchrist teachers started off their year in the gutter! We went bowling as a school. There is nothing more amusing than seeing a bunch of teachers in funny looking shoes and throwing heavy bowling balls around. The fifth grade team won our first competition against the special area teachers, but lost to the fiercely competitive fourth grade team. It was a great way to get back into the swing of things. It's sure to be an excellent year!

Mrs. Sims and Mrs. Whitaker hit the Mag Lab
Last week Mrs. Sims and I spent the week at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. We were a part of Lab Crawl II, which is a continuation of Lab Crawl I from last summer. We visited FDLE, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Lab, FSU's College of Biology, and of course the Mag Lab. We saw a lot of cool stuff, and science in action! I can't wait to share it with my new students this fall. Doesn't Mrs. Sims look cool in those protective goggles??
